SMack strikes again with a voodoo theme for Halloween weekend.
Chashama Theatre, NYC
135 West 42nd Street between 6th and 7th Avenues.

St. Eve is billed as the Queen of the legion of the dead, so I drag out my spookiest perf-art pals, Sarabella, Velocity Chyaldd and Eve Prince.

I walked in and gave the dj my backing cd. We agree that as soon as I come on, he will fade the music and start playing my stuff. Great.

The girls and I cover ourselves in white body make-up, black eyes and these white fabric drapings. I put on my Russ Burns mondo-humungo wings and we enter stage-left ceremoniously. I get on top of a huge ladder and the girls seductively get into a kind of ritual stance.

We wait.

The industrial 4-on-the-floor beats are still pounding and there's no fade. The girls begin to writhe and touch themselves. Another song goes by and they begin to interact. I am on a friggin' ladder in big wings and scary make-up, and getting down from this thing without help is simply not an option. I spot an ex-lover whom I haven't seen in years, who is looking pretty normal and frankly, not bad. I look up and keep my head there. I am told that I had a strange smile on my face. ANOTHER song begins and Chris Flam (the father of the event) signals to test the microphone. I begin to sing over the tracks, house-music style oohs and aahs with a little Diamanda thrown in for flavor, and people think this is the show. Now we know the mic is working.

By now the girls have broken into the blood which was meant for our second song and I'm wondering if I should wait 'til the end of this song and say, "Thank you, Cleveland! Goodnight!".

ANOTHER song begins and I stare at the ceiling again. The girls simulate an orgy and I am The Queen of the Legion of the Dead... on a ladder with a mic in my lap, skull make-up, huge, dangerous wings and I don't want to keep singing over other people's music. Maybe I was being a bad sport, but you'd think the Queen of the Legion of the Dead (a term Chris came up with, and an odd one because a legion is only 500. What happens to the other dead people? They dont' get a queen on a ladder wondering if she looks completely stupid in front of an incarnate ex-lover?) would have some control.

Finally, the music begins and I am impressed with the improvisational skills of my fake-blood smothered friends. They keep thinking of weirdly erotic things to do while I sing and our wine glasses of tinted corn syrup just keep gushing.

Eve helped me down from the ladder and we got into the second chorus of the first song when the music cut out and I found myself singing the rest a capella. The room became eerily quiet and I noticed that the girls made a slow frenzy kind of thing. I may have laughed. The music came back on and we got through the rest of the set without too much hassle. I still get comments about that show and I always hope that folks were too drunk to notice the snafus.

Burning Man Festival The House of St. Eve teams up with One Arm Red.
We spent a lot of time at KMart. There was unspeakable beauty everywhere. As a newbie, I spent most of my time with my jaw dropped at the effort and stunning success of the constant stream of art. One Arm Red showed up 5 days late. We bought too much food, even if they'd shown up on time. The weather was cold and wind-stormy but that brought people together. I wore my fake-fur coats and googles - purchased with a trade of homemade wine. Charles and Destin quoted Nietzche from the roof of the RV during a storm until a naked ranger told them to get down. I think there was a camel. I had a myriad of epiphanies and let go like I never can in New York. We drove too far in a huge rv and vowed to do it through Reno next time. Then we spent the night in Reno on the way back after busting a tire. I cried at the thought of coming "home".

08.20
Communion in Los Angeles
St. Eve in their gothic wonderland. A slave auction allowed you to buy a luscious (and brave) clubgoer for the night! I think I scared someone with a conversation about how all paths lead to God, even satanism (slower).
