L Gabrielle Penabaz has recorded
an album as Saint Eve. Her inspired fusion of electronica and darkwave
is thrilling.
"Bete Noire" tells of a decadent lifestyle to pulsing beats.
Penabaz adopts a half-spoken vocal style that owes something to Laurie
Anderson. The glammy "Jets" has plenty of hooks and an underlying
menace. "Reina Roja" has lyrics in Spanish and crunchy Nine
Inch Nails-like beats. Trent Reznor was never this much fun. "Morgan
of You" is a strong study of obsession. Penabaz' vixen-ish vocal
guides the music home. The cover of R.E.M's "It's the End of the
World as We Know it (and I feel fine)" is splendid.
Saint Eve's album is a great thing.
